What Not to Say About Health Issues
The thing is, I know how to be polite. But sometimes I get stuck in a loop (he looks terrible, he looks terrible, he looks terrible), time passes, and it's clear I need to say something. I know I can't say he looks terrible, so "Are you contagious?" just pops out.
| When A Loved One is Depressed
Let me put down the joke stick a moment. Depression is just awful. I had a bout of it after losing a job, and it got so bad I went to the hospital thinking, essentially, that I was dying. There was no snapping out of it. So if you have someone in your life who is going through something, read up on not putting your foot in your mouth, OK?
| Got a Friend Who is Dieting?
My friend is clearly on a diet, so I said, "I don't want you to feel badly about leaving all this food," and I just reached over and scraped it onto my plate. By the time it was clear that no one was on a diet, I had finished his meal. This has happened three times in my life. Don't say this to dieters.
| Another Tip: If You Aren't In Labor, Be Quiet
While Mrs. Bob was in labor with child one, I complained about being cold, and how lumpy the chair was that I slept in. That's the day I learned women in labor are mighty strong.
