About

From Bob Schulties, your About Today Editor
My 10-year-old daughter (let's call her Boo because...that's what I call her, but don't tell her I told you so) wanted an iPad. I explained to her that times are tight, and until we had a little more money, she'd have to wait. So when Mrs. Bob was planning a garage sale, I suggested to Boo that maybe she bake some of her famous pumpkin bread. In three weekends, she baked and sold enough pumpkin bread to buy herself a new iPad! Anyway, I'm using this newsletter as an announcement that I'm quitting my job to go into the pumpkin-bread-selling business. I should be able to put my daughter out of business in about two weeks.

Homemade Lemonade
I don't buy drinks from the local kids--not because there's anything wrong with the drinks, but I find it weird to walk around with an open cup. And if I drink it at the stand, I feel like I have to make small talk with a little kid. I don't have anything to say to a little kid I don't know. Eventually, it'll come up that there's no Santa, and I'll be hated. Have you made this?

What Really Sells at Bake Sales
At the Bob Bakery we don't have a huge variety, but what we make we make really, really well. So this list has a ton of great ideas, but I recommend picking just one or two and perfecting them. But if you pick the pumpkin bread, I'm gonna have to sic Mr. Peterson on you (he'll shed you into submission). The best-selling bake sale goodies.

Baking With Your Children
At this point, Boo can do 95% of what's needed in the kitchen. It's just the oven that she's afraid of, and until she feels she's ready, I'll handle that part. I've also convinced her that if the pumpkin bread is perfect, it's because I took it out of oven at the right time.

Thinking of Opening Your Own Restaurant?
There are some jobs harder than opening a brand new restaurant, but only a few. And who wants to be a lion tamer, teacher, cat wrangler or Ring Ding taster? OK, OK, I'll be the Ring Ding taster. But I'm doing it to take one for the team. Dreaming of your own restaurant?
